A Florida Keys Favorite

What Is A Spiny Lobster?

Spiny lobster is a general name given to about four dozen species of clawless lobster found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, as well as in colder waters of the Southern Hemisphere.

Distinctively Different

No Claws. Plenty Of Character.

Unlike the familiar American lobster, the Florida spiny lobster does not have large front claws.

Instead, the species is distinguished by the sharp, short spines found along the length of its body and tail. Its long antennae and armored shell give the spiny lobster its unmistakable appearance.

The original Fishbusterz description notes that these lobsters may be beautifully marked with bright green, blue and yellow spots over an orange or brown shell.

What Makes It Different?

Florida spiny lobster looks very different from the cold-water lobster many people first picture when they hear the word "lobster."

Clawless Lobster

Spiny lobster does not have the large claws associated with the American lobster.

Spiny Shell

Short, sharp spines along the body and tail help give this lobster both its appearance and its name.

Rock Lobster

The terms “rock lobster” and “spiny lobster” are commonly used interchangeably.
